mend

源自拉丁文 menda, fault 过错，毛病。

★ a mend  vt. 改正，修改；改良

｛ a- (= e- = ex-) out of 离开 → 去掉 , ＋ mend, fault 毛病 → 把毛病去掉 → 改正，修改；改良｝

※ amend 源自拉丁语动词 emend are 的词干 emend 。“ -are ”是拉丁语动词的不定式字尾，相当于英语动词不定式的“ to ” ｛ emendare, to correct ( 纠正 ), free from fault ( 摆脱过错 ) ｝

* They decided to amend the bill. 他们决定修正这条议案。

* The thief has amended . 这小偷改过自新了。

☆ amend ment  n. 改正，修改

｛ -ment, action, process 名词字尾，表「行为或过程」｝

* The plan was passed without amendments . 这个计划未经修改就通过了。

★ mend v. 修补；恢复健康

* Can you mend the hole in my shirt? 你能补一下我衬衫上的洞吗？ (vt.)

* He’s mending nicely after his operation. 手术后他正在顺利康复。 (vi.)

☆ mend able adj. 可修理的，可改进的，可更正的

｛ -able 形容词字尾，表「能～的，可～的」｝

★ e mend  vt. 修订，校正

｛ e-(ex-), out 出来 ＋ mend, fault 毛病 → to find out the fault 把毛病找出来 → 修订，校正｝

* Many men are needed to emend this book. 修订这本书需要许多人手。

☆ emend ation  n. 修订，校正，修正

｛ -ation, action, process 名词字尾，表「行为或过程」｝

* The emendation of the English book made his boss very satisfied. 这本英语书的校正使得他的老板很满意。

★ mend acious  adj. 虚假的，说谎的

｛ mend, fault 过错 ＋ -acious (-ac + -ious), characterized by 复合形容词字尾，表「具有～品质的」 → 有过错的 → 虚假的，说谎的｝

※ –acious （ -ac + -ious ） , characterized by, inclined to, full of 形容词字尾，表「具有～特征的，有～倾向的，充 满～ 的」，又如：

ten acious ( 顽强的 ), fall acious ( 谬误的 ), rap acious ( 掠夺的 ), sag acious ( 有远见的 ), veracious( 说实话的 )

* a mendacious child 一个说谎的孩子

☆ mend acity  n. 撒谎癖；虚假，谎言

｛ -acity (-ac + -ity), character 复合名词字尾，表「人的品质」｝

-acity ( -ac + -ity ) , being full of 名词字尾，表示「充满，富于」，又如：

☆ vor acity  n. 贪食，贪婪｛ vor- eat 吃｝

* He ate with the voracity of a starving man. 他饿鬼似的贪婪地吃着。

☆ aud acity n. 大胆 ｛ aud, bold 大胆的｝

* Sky-diving takes both audacity and skill. 特技跳伞需要胆量和技巧。

☆ cap acity  n. 接受力，容量；能力 ｛ cap, take 拿，抓｝

* The lift has a capacity of 15 persons. 这部电梯的载容量为 15 人。

* Children’s reasoning capacity must be developed. 孩子们的推理能力必须加以培养。

* He will never change his bad habit of edacity . 他改不掉贪吃的恶习。

-ac 是 -ic 的变形，主要跟在以“ i ”结尾的希腊语名词词干后面，构成名词或形容词，如：

☆ cardiac n. 心脏病患者 adj. 心脏的（ cardi-, heart 心脏）

☆ maniac n. 燥狂 ( 症 ) 者 adj. 发狂的，癫狂的（希腊语 mania 疯狂）

☆ aphrodisiac adj. 引起性欲的 n. 壮阳剂，春药｛ aphrodisi- 源逢希腊语 aphrodisi os ，意为 of Aphrodite 阿佛洛狄特的，亦即 Aphrodite 的属格。阿佛洛狄特是希腊神话中司爱与美之女神｝
